Rep. John Bell Recognized as 2025 Defender of Public Safety by N.C. Sheriffs’ Association

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association (NCSA) has honored Representative John Bell (R-Wayne) with the 2025 Defender of Public Safety award for his dedicated efforts during the 2025 legislative session to strengthen public safety across the state.

Legislative Accomplishments in Public Safety

The recognition comes after a legislative session heavily focused on law enforcement and public safety issues. Representative Bell played a key role in advancing the Association’s priorities, which directly impact the state’s 100 sheriffs, their offices, and communities throughout North Carolina.

“Representative Bell has been a valuable partner in the recent legislative session, supporting the legislative priorities of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association which is a voice for all 100 sheriffs of the state,” said Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan, President of the Association.

Key Legislative Victories

Among the significant accomplishments this session were measures that will bring harsher penalties for criminals distributing fentanyl in North Carolina communities. Additionally, new laws will impose stricter punishments on felons who illegally possess and use firearms despite existing prohibitions.

Another major victory addressed a critical concern for law enforcement personnel. Legislation passed this session ensures that officers will no longer face the difficult choice between continuing their service to their communities and forfeiting retirement benefits earned throughout their careers.

Representative Bell Responds

“It’s an honor to be recognized for my efforts to enhance public safety in North Carolina,” Representative Bell said. “I will always stand firm with our law enforcement officers and continue advocating for policies that protect our communities and uphold law and order.”

Representative Bell’s legislative district includes Wayne County, served by Sheriff Larry Pierce.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 legislative session saw the General Assembly consider hundreds of bills and enact dozens of laws directly impacting law enforcement and public safety operations statewide. The 2026 session is scheduled to begin in April and is expected to bring additional law enforcement and public safety legislation for consideration.
