October 18, 2025, 91, Goldsboro —
Kenneth Brent Best, 91, of the Smiths’ Chapel community died Saturday at UNC Wayne Hospital in Goldsboro. He is survived by his son; Tony Best and his wife Bobbie of Mount Olive; his grandchildren, Kellie B. Turner and husband Jeffrey of Clayton, Morgan B. Stokes and her husband Collin of Benson, and Kendall Grantham; he is also survived by his great-grand son, Parker Turner; and a special great niece, Angela Wall King. Kenneth was the son of the late Robert Best and Minnie Jordan Best; he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bland Best; a daughter and son-in-law, Joy Grantham and Mike; and a brother and sister, Jordan Best and Melrose Best Bryan.
Kenneth was a simple, independent man, that made a life-long living off the land. He enjoyed farming, especially produce and vegetables and had become known as the “Squash King” for growing those beautiful, perfect sized yellow squash. An avid sports fan, Kenneth could always quote the STATS of any team, and any sport. The Boston Red Socks were one of his favorite teams to follow, having visited Fin-way Stadium with his son and nephew at the age of 80. Kenneth will be remembered as having lived a long, peaceful life; wealthy in ways not recognized by today’s standards.
A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service, and at other times at the home of Mr. Kenneth.
