More than 100 gather to celebrate service, longevity, and leadership
GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Golden K Kiwanis Club held its Annual Awards Banquet at Daniels Memorial Church, on Thursday, October 3, bringing together more than 100 members and guests for an evening of fellowship, recognition, and celebration under the leadership of newly installed president Ed Holt.
The event featured a traditional barbecue and fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings and a variety of desserts. Anthony Slater delivered the opening prayer and blessing following the pledge of allegiance.
Leadership Transition and Service Recognition
Holt recognized outgoing president Jack Kannan for his outstanding leadership during the past year. The evening’s highlights included the presentation of several prestigious awards honoring longtime members and exceptional service.
Richard Cooke presented Legion of Honor Awards to five members for their remarkable longevity as Kiwanians. Earl Murphy received recognition for 25 years of membership, followed by Tommy Gibson with 26 years, Aaron Williford with 28 years, and Mike Haney with 32 years. Topping the list was Bob Hill, who has maintained his membership for an impressive 65 years.
Kiwanian of the Year Announced
In a surprise presentation, Bill Broadaway announced Richard Cooke as the recipient of The Frank Joyner Kiwanian of the Year Award. Cooke has served as club secretary with dedication and diligence since the passing of Buddy Pipkin, who had set a standard of excellence in that role.
Former mayor and club member Tommy Gibson also recognized special guest Mary Emma Stevens for her musical contributions to the club. Stevens has served as club pianist for a number of years.
Musical Performance Concludes Evening
The evening concluded with a special musical performance by golden-voiced singer Steve Jones, introduced by Billy Reeves. Jones received enthusiastic applause from the crowd. Reeves also delivered the benediction.
Attendees departed with smiles and grateful hearts, already looking forward to next year’s gathering.
