North Carolina Launches Statewide Child Passenger Safety Campaign to Combat Improper Car Seat Installation

RALEIGH, N.C. — State officials launched a comprehensive child passenger safety campaign Monday, targeting a critical problem that affects eight out of 10 families: improperly installed or used car seats.

The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, in partnership with the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal and Safe Kids NC, kicked off the statewide initiative at Morrisville Fire Station, where officials distributed 50 free car seats to families in need and conducted installation demonstrations.

The campaign, running through September 28, combines education, enforcement, and hands-on assistance to address widespread safety seat misuse that officials say puts children at unnecessary risk.

“Child passenger safety is about more than compliance—it’s about protecting lives,” said NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “Our partnership with the Office of State Fire Marshal and Safe Kids NC brings resources and hands-on help to families, so every child rides safely.”

Statewide Enforcement and Education Efforts

During the campaign week, law enforcement agencies across North Carolina will establish checkpoint stations to inspect child passenger restraints. Certified technicians will also provide free car seat installation clinics and safety inspections throughout the state.

The initiative leverages North Carolina’s extensive network of more than 3,100 nationally certified child passenger safety technicians operating in 97 of the state’s 100 counties. These trained professionals are equipped to properly install car seats and educate parents on correct usage.

“Thanks to these and other child safety efforts, North Carolina maintains its position as one of the strongest child passenger safety programs in the nation,” said Chief State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor.

Year-Round Resources Available

Beyond the week-long campaign, parents and caregivers can access free car seat checking services year-round. The state operates permanent checking stations in all 100 North Carolina counties, with detailed information available at buckleupnc.org.

The campaign addresses a persistent safety challenge, as studies show that the majority of child safety seats are not used correctly, potentially compromising their effectiveness in preventing injuries during vehicle crashes.

State officials emphasize that proper installation and usage of child safety seats could prevent additional injuries and save more young lives, making education and enforcement critical components of highway safety efforts.
