Harry Lee Cashwell

Harry Lee Cashwell, resident of the Smith Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 9, 2025, while in the care of Wayne UNC Healthcare.

Mr. Cashwell, born and raised in the Smith Chapel area, had a long tenure of service with the North Carolina National Guard.  Upon his early adulthood, he left his parents farm and became associated with CSX Railroad, and made Wilmington his home.  Upon his retirement, he returned to Smith Chapel.  Harry Lee was a member of the Smith Chapel Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” and Eulah McCullen Cashwell; his only brother and sister-in-law, William G. “Billy” Cashwell and Martha Carol Cashwell; and an infant great-nephew, Ben Cashwell.

He is survived by two nephews, Gill Cashwell and wife, Lynn, and Kenneth Cashwell, all of the Smith Chapel area; three great-nieces and a great-nephew, Bethany Auburn Cashwell, Brandon Keith Cashwell, Brooke Allison Cashwell, and Brittni Alese Cashwell, all of the Smith Chapel area.

The life of Mr. Harry Lee Cashwell will be reflected upon at a service Thursday, September 11, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home.  Visitation with the Cashwell family will follow the service.  Burial will be Friday, September 12, at 10 a.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery.  Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Cure for the Colors, c/o Southeastern Cancer Center, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534; or to Smith Chapel Church.
