North Carolina DMV to Hire 40 New Examiners in Push to Reduce Wait Times

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) announced Tuesday it will hire 40 new driver license examiners following legislative approval of funding in a mini-budget signed by Governor Josh Stein earlier this month.

The new positions are part of a statewide effort to address long wait times and reduce customer lines at DMV offices across North Carolina, officials said.

“We thank the legislature, governor, and auditor for their support in creating these vital positions,” NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine said in a statement. “Our team is focused on quickly hiring and training examiners to improve service and reduce wait times for North Carolinians.”

The agency has opened applications for the examiner positions on its DMV Careers webpage and plans to accelerate the hiring process through job fairs scheduled throughout the state in the coming weeks. Candidates will be able to learn about the roles and submit applications on-site at the recruitment events.

The additional examiners are expected to enhance the DMV’s capacity to provide faster, more reliable services for driver licenses, state identification cards, and other motor vehicle services. The agency serves millions of North Carolina residents annually across its network of driver license offices.

Long wait times at DMV offices have been an ongoing concern for residents across the state, with some locations experiencing delays that can stretch for hours during peak periods. The new hiring initiative represents a direct response to these service challenges.

NCDMV officials said they are encouraging qualified candidates to apply and join efforts to improve the overall customer experience at state motor vehicle facilities.

Information about upcoming recruitment events and job applications is available on the NCDMV website.
