GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) kicked off the new academic year this week as two non-traditional calendar schools opened their doors to students, with the remaining 31 schools set to begin classes on Monday, August 25.
The district is rolling out several new initiatives and resources to ensure families are prepared for a successful school year, including a multilingual communication platform and enhanced safety measures.
New Communication System Launches
WCPS is introducing Talking Points as its primary two-way communication tool between families and schools. The platform, provided by the district’s Federal Programs and Curriculum & Instruction departments, offers translation services in more than 150 languages and will replace previous messaging systems.
“This platform is designed to provide clear, consistent communication, ensuring every family feels informed and included,” district officials stated.
Open House Events Scheduled
All schools will host Open House activities next week, providing families opportunities to meet teachers and staff, learn about classroom expectations, familiarize themselves with campus layouts, and obtain supply lists and daily schedules.
Specific dates and times vary by school and can be found on the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org under the Open House Schedule section.
Safety Measures Emphasized
With thousands of students commuting by bus, car, bicycle, and on foot, WCPS is urging all drivers to prioritize student safety. The district asks motorists to never pass school buses with flashing amber lights, allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes, watch for children at bus stops and along roadways, and reduce speed in crosswalks and school zones.
Community Involvement Encouraged
The district continues to seek volunteers to support school operations and student experiences. Those interested in volunteering can apply through the “Become a Volunteer” section on the district website.
Superintendent’s Message
“Our staff and administrators are excited to welcome students back for the new school year,” said Dr. Marc Whichard, Superintendent. “We are committed to supporting every student by providing safe, welcoming schools and engaging teaching. The dedication and support of our schools, families, and community have had significant impacts on student outcomes, and we are ready to build on that momentum this year.”
Families can access additional resources, including lunch menus and other important information, at www.waynecountyschools.org. The district plans to share additional updates as the school year progresses.
