NC By Train Ridership Continues Upward Trajectory in 2025

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina’s state-supported intercity passenger rail service is maintaining its momentum with continued ridership growth, according to data released by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

NC By Train experienced a 4% increase in ridership during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The service transported over 355,000 passengers in the first six months of 2025, up from approximately 342,000 passengers during the corresponding timeframe last year.

All Piedmont Corridor Stations See Growth

The positive trend extends across the entire Piedmont corridor route connecting Raleigh and Charlotte, with every station reporting increased passenger boardings and departures ranging from 5% to 13%.

Salisbury led the growth with a 13% increase, followed by Burlington at 12% and Kannapolis at 11%. Charlotte, the western terminus, saw a 10% rise in passenger activity. Other stations reported the following increases:

  • Greensboro: 8%
  • High Point: 7%
  • Durham: 7%
  • Raleigh: 6%
  • Cary: 5%

Multi-Year Growth Pattern Established

The 2025 figures continue a remarkable growth pattern that began in 2022. Annual ridership has climbed from 522,000 passengers in 2022 to 641,000 in 2023, and exceeded 720,000 passengers in 2024.

“We’re proud to provide an effective transportation option for North Carolinians that is convenient, affordable and reliable,” said Jason Orthner, director of the N.C. Department of Transportation Rail Division. “This type of growth supports continued improvement and expansion of NC By Train as we plan for the future.”

Service Improvements Drive Popularity

Rail officials attribute the growing popularity to several factors, including increased public awareness of the service’s convenience and affordability, environmental benefits, and expanded scheduling options. The addition of a fifth daily round-trip between Raleigh and Charlotte in July 2023 has particularly benefited ridership numbers.

Passenger Amenities and Discount Programs

NC By Train continues to emphasize passenger comfort and accessibility with spacious seating, individual charging outlets, and complimentary WiFi service. The system offers various discount programs for children, students, active military personnel, veterans, and senior citizens.

The service’s Share Fare program allows groups of up to eight passengers to receive progressive savings with each additional ticket purchased, making group travel more economical.
