RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Rural Center has announced that applications are now open for its Rural Economic Development Institute (REDI), the organization’s premier leadership development program designed to strengthen rural communities across the state.
The three-month intensive training initiative, which has been operating since 1990, targets both established and emerging leaders who are committed to addressing economic and community development challenges in rural North Carolina.
Program Builds on Decades of Success
Over its 34-year history, REDI has trained more than 1,200 participants, providing them with comprehensive knowledge of economic and community development strategies. The program equips graduates with practical skills and tools necessary to drive positive change in their communities.
“Rural communities need strong leadership to thrive,” said Olaunda Green, director of leadership training at the Rural Center. “We’re proud to provide training opportunities that not only equip established leaders but also emerging leaders who will greatly impact the future of rural North Carolina.”
Diverse Participant Base
The program welcomes a broad range of participants each year, including local, state, and federal government staff, nonprofit and faith-based leaders, business owners, elected officials, and economic development professionals. Community-minded individuals from various sectors participate in nine days of intensive rural community economic development training.
Extensive Alumni Network
REDI graduates become part of a robust alumni network that spans all 100 North Carolina counties. This network also includes graduates from the Rural Center’s other leadership training program, Homegrown Leaders. Alumni maintain active roles across multiple sectors, including state and local government, philanthropic organizations, nonprofits, small businesses, and faith-based and community organizations.
Application Details
Interested candidates can access applications through the REDI webpage. The application period will remain open through August 25, 2025.
The Rural Economic Development Institute represents a significant investment in North Carolina’s rural future, continuing its mission to develop the leadership capacity needed to address ongoing economic and community challenges in rural areas across the state.
