NCDOT Continues Storm Recovery Efforts as State Approves Major Hurricane Relief Package

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are working around the clock to assess and repair damage from Tropical Storm Chantal, which brought heavy rainfall and powerful winds to the central region of the state this week.

The storm caused significant disruption to the transportation network, with more than 100 roads forced to close at the peak of the weather event. NCDOT crews continue to evaluate the extent of damage and prioritize repairs in affected areas.

“Drivers may continue to see crews in affected areas as cleanup and repairs progress,” the department stated. Officials are urging motorists to exercise caution when traveling through impacted zones, avoid standing water, and follow all posted detours and barricades.

Legislature Approves $700 Million Hurricane Helene Relief Package

The North Carolina Department of Transportation received a significant boost in its ongoing recovery efforts following the approval of a major state relief package for Hurricane Helene damages.

The state legislature unanimously passed House Bill 1012, the fifth relief bill related to Hurricane Helene recovery. Governor Josh Stein signed the legislation into law, allocating $700 million for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts statewide.

Of the total package, nearly $300 million will be directed specifically to NCDOT for recovery operations in areas impacted by the hurricane. This funding represents a substantial investment in rebuilding and strengthening the state’s transportation infrastructure.
