July 4, 2025, 65, Goldsboro —
On Friday, July 4, 2025, Jeffrey Lane Wells hung up his hat and headed home to glory, passing away peacefully at the age of 65. Born and raised in Wayne County, Jeff was the son of Eugene Gordon Wells and the late Glenda Lane Wells Yeomans—a true son of Eastern North Carolina soil.
Jeff was a good ole boy through and through. He spent many years running the Gurley Store on Gurley Dairy Road, where you could always count on a cold drink, a warm smile, and a solid handshake. Folks knew Jeff not just for the store, but for his heart, his humor, and his no-nonsense way of looking at life.
If it had an engine, Jeff could build it. A die-hard racing man, he spent countless weekends under the hood, serving as a crew chief and engine builder for local teams. When the track dust settled, Jeff could often be found down by his favorite fishing hole—just him, his thoughts, and the quiet ripple of water.
In recent years, Jeff turned his talents toward the kitchen and workshop. He could whip up a mean dish—especially if it had cabbage and cream of mushroom soup—and his sweet treats always disappeared fast at the Farm Credit Farmers Market. His handmade cutting boards and furniture were made with the kind of care and craftsmanship you don’t see much anymore.
Jeff loved hard and laughed easy. He is survived by the love of his life, Diane Jefferson, who stood by his side through thick and thin. He was a proud father to his daughter, Ashlee Schallert and her husband Chris, and an even prouder “Papa” to his grandkids: Kya, Ethan, Catie, Dylan, and Katherine. He leaves behind his father and step-mother, Gordon and Glenda Wells; his brothers—Michael (Molly), Scotty (Diane), and Kevin (Chrissy); his step-sister Michelle Long (James); and a whole passel of nieces, nephews, and extended family who’ll miss him dearly.
Jeff also shared a strong bond with Diane’s son, Donnie Pierce (Bonnie) and their daughter, Sarah—proof that family isn’t just blood, it’s love.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Andy Stovall officiating. Jeff will be laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
In honor of Jeff’s generous spirit, the family asks that memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
Jeff Wells was the kind of man you don’t forget—steady, strong, and straight-shooting. Heaven just gained one fine country gentleman.
