RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina law enforcement agencies have begun an intensive statewide campaign aimed at preventing impaired driving during one of the year’s most dangerous holiday periods. The “Operation Firecracker Booze It & Lose It” campaign launched Monday and will run through July 6, targeting the days surrounding Independence Day celebrations.
Increased Patrols and Checkpoints
The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program is coordinating the effort, which combines public outreach with stepped-up enforcement including additional checkpoints and patrols. Law enforcement officers from all 100 counties across the state will participate in the campaign.
“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday and celebrate but getting behind the wheel after drinking is never worth the risk,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell.
Alarming Statistics Drive Campaign
The enforcement push comes in response to troubling crash data. Last year alone, North Carolina recorded 11,782 crashes statewide involving drivers under the influence of alcohol. During the 2024 Fourth of July weekend specifically, the state saw 176 alcohol-related crashes and five fatalities.
The Fourth of July period consistently ranks among the deadliest times on American roads, making targeted enforcement efforts particularly critical during this holiday.
Law Enforcement Emphasizes Prevention
Police officials stress that preventing impaired driving requires advance planning rather than last-minute decisions.
“Celebrating the Fourth of July responsibly could not be simpler,” said Michael Panzarella, chief of police for Emerald Isle, which helped launch this year’s campaign. “What’s not simple are the impacts of someone choosing to drink and then drive. Decide in advance how to get home safely.”
Safe Transportation Alternatives
Officials recommend several strategies for safe holiday travel:
- Designating a sober driver before festivities begin
- Using taxi or rideshare services
- Planning transportation in advance rather than making decisions while impaired
Severe Legal Consequences
The “Booze It & Lose It” campaign serves as a reminder that impaired driving carries serious legal penalties. Officers participating in the operation will actively pursue DUI arrests, and convicted drivers face license suspension, fines, and potential jail time.
“Too often we see impaired drivers injure themselves and others when they make the choice to drive under the influence,” Panzarella added.
The campaign aims to create both a safer environment and more enjoyable holiday experience for all North Carolina residents and visitors.
