Wayne Community College Dedicates Dental Clinic in Honor of Erma Neal Thomas

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Wayne Community College (WCC) has officially named its on-campus dental clinic the Erma Neal Thomas Dental Clinic, honoring a trailblazing alumna whose lifelong dedication to public health transformed dental hygiene education and care in North Carolina.

A Career of Firsts and Community Commitment

Erma Neal Thomas graduated from WCC’s Dental Hygiene program in 1973 and went on to become one of North Carolina’s first public health dental hygienists. Over a 26-year career, she worked within Wayne County Public Schools and Goldsboro City Schools, screening and teaching more than 10,000 children annually.

Affectionately known as “the tooth lady,” Thomas introduced toothbrushing education in schools and spearheaded major initiatives like school-based and community water fluoridation, fluoride mouth rinse programs, and the state’s first dental sealant initiative.

A Lasting Tribute

The naming of the clinic was marked by a dedication ceremony attended by Thomas’s family, friends, and former colleagues.

“Erma’s knowledge and advocacy of dental hygiene transformed the field, both locally and on a larger scale,” said Ernie White, WCC’s Dean of Applied Technologies. “As we name our dental clinic in her memory, it is a permanent reminder of what she valued for decades: education, public health, and above all, service to others.”

Leadership and Recognition

Beyond her local work, Thomas served as president of both the Southeastern Dental Hygienists’ Society and the North Carolina Dental Hygienists’ Association. Her leadership and achievements earned her several honors, including the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian award.

Remembering a True Pioneer

Edna Hensey, a longtime colleague and close friend, reflected on Thomas’s influence during the ceremony.

“Erma was a leader in all that she did,” Hensey said. “Together with colleagues, she not only served her community here in Wayne and surrounding counties but also changed the face of dental public health across the state. This is a fitting legacy for such a wonderful public health servant and person.”

Training the Next Generation

The WCC dental hygiene clinic provides students with practical experience treating patients under professional supervision while also serving the local community. The naming of the clinic was made possible through a donation from Thomas’s family.

Her daughter, Cathy, shared that Thomas was deeply moved upon learning of the honor before her passing. “She promptly began crying joyful tears,” Cathy said. “She loved dental health, and we’re so very proud of her legacy. This school and this clinic offered Mom great training that led to a wonderful career.”
