PIKEVILLE, N.C. — On June 12 at approximately 8:17 p.m., officers with the Pikeville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a red Ford Expedition after the driver allegedly failed to use turn signals
Odor of Alcohol Detected During Stop
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers reported detecting a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from inside. The driver, identified as Ted Harvey Hawkins, was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and provide a sample for a portable breath test.
Search Uncovers Open Alcohol Container
During a consensual search of the vehicle, officers located an open container of alcohol within the driver’s immediate reach, commonly referred to as the “lungable area.”
Driver Arrested and Charged
Hawkins was taken into custody and a consensual blood draw was performed. He was later transported to the Wayne County Jail and booked under a $500 secured bond.
