Cards, Community, and Connection: Councilwoman Brandi Matthews Hosts “UNO & Uplift” Event to Empower Youth and Families

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — This Friday, District 4 Councilwoman Brandi Matthews is proving that sometimes, the best way to build stronger communities starts with a deck of UNO cards.

Her latest event, “UNO & Uplift,” will take place on Friday, June 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the WA Foster Center in Goldsboro. But Matthews is clear: this isn’t just about playing a game.

“We’re not just playing cards,” said Matthews. “We’re building community.”

The Heart Behind the Cards

With summer in full swing and young people out of school, Matthews wanted to create an event that kept them engaged while fostering deeper connections between youth, parents, and neighbors.

“We’ve seen a lot going on over the past few years involving our young people. We can’t just talk about it—we have to show up and support them. This is one way we can do that.”

UNO & Uplift is open to all ages—not just youth—and Matthews is encouraging adults to come out, play, and be present. That’s the “Uplift” part: showing young people that their community is truly behind them.

“This is also about telling parents, ‘You’re not alone. You have a village here.’”

How It Works: Uno With a Twist of Unity

The event will feature five official playing tables. Winners from each table will advance to a high-stakes “winner’s table” where they’ll compete for a grand prize. All participants will enjoy:

  • Free food and drinks
  • UNO-themed prizes
  • Games and music
  • A welcoming, uplifting atmosphere

And yes—official house rules will be enforced.

“I’m an 80s baby,” Matthews joked. “We’re playing old-school UNO. No switching hands with sevens, no stacking draw twos and draw fours. I’m printing out the rules and placing them at every table.”

Every participant will walk away with something, including pocket-sized travel UNO decks. The winner’s grand prize? Matthews teased it will be “something you can use anywhere,” hinting at a universally useful gift card.

The Inspiration: Carver Heights and Lunch Buddy Moments

The idea for UNO & Uplift was born during Matthews’ time as a Lunch Buddy at Carver Heights Elementary.

“The kids loved playing UNO. It became more than just a game—it became a way for us to connect, ask questions, and learn more about each other,” she said. “That’s what made me realize: this simple game has power.”

A Room Designed for Fun and Fellowship

WA Foster Center will be transformed into a festive, UNO-themed space, complete with colorful decorations, music, and dedicated score tables. The competition will follow a “best of five” format at the starter tables, with the winner’s table showdown decided in a single, high-stakes game.

“I want that hot seat vibe,” Matthews said. “All or nothing.”

While the winner’s table competes, the rest of the attendees can enjoy food, music, and additional rounds of casual UNO.

More Than One Event—A Movement of Connection

UNO & Uplift isn’t a one-time thing. Matthews says she envisions it as a seasonal series, especially during the summer months.

“I’d host one every Friday if that’s what it took. We need spaces like this—where people can laugh, play, talk, and feel supported.”

Local Support Makes It Happen

The event is made possible through community collaboration. Matthews credits Commissioner Antonio Foster and Landscape and Design for their donations and behind-the-scenes support.

“Events like this take a village—not just for the kids, but for the planning, too,” she said. “I never want to overlook those who help make these moments possible.”

Approachable Leadership, One Game at a Time

Now in her second term as Councilwoman, Matthews says she’s still learning every day—but one thing that hasn’t changed is her commitment to staying connected.

“You don’t have to come to the podium to talk to me. Grab me at church. Talk to me at an event. Your voice matters wherever you share it,” she said. “Every decision I make, the community is at the heart of it.”

Everyone’s Invited

While District 4 is hosting, UNO & Uplift is open to the entire Goldsboro community. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

“The show’s going on—whether one person comes or twenty-one,” Matthews said with a smile. “But based on registration so far, it’s looking like a hit.”
