Josh Preskitt officiating. Interment will be on the family farm at the Sauls Family Cemetery. At other times, friends may visit with the family at their home.

Born July 22, 1951, Richard was the beloved son of Preston and Lizzie Sauls and was raised on the family farm in Eureka, North Carolina. He graduated from Charles B. Aycock High School and continued his education at Wayne Community College and East Carolina University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later completed both a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in School Administration at ECU, as well as a six-year advanced certification in School Administration.

Richard devoted over 40 years to the field of education, primarily within the Wayne County school system. He also shared his knowledge and leadership with other school districts as needed. Throughout his career, he was known as a dedicated educator, administrator, and mentor to students and colleagues alike.

A faithful member of Daniels Chapel Church in Wilson County, Richard served his church family with the same commitment he gave to his professional life. He was a member of the Deacons Board, an adult Sunday School teacher, and a Bible Study teacher. In addition, he served on various other church committees, always willing to lend his time and heart to his community of faith.

After retirement, Richard relished returning to the family farm, where he maintained the home where he was raised and took pride in keeping the yard beautifully manicured. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, Yvonne, their daughter Stephanie and her husband Dean, and his cherished grandson, Landon Bridgers. Whether watching Landon’s sports or fishing with him, Richard found pure joy in being an involved and loving grandfather.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Yvonne, of the home; daughter, Stephanie S. Bridgers (Dean), and grandson, Landon Bridgers of Pikeville; brothers, Jay Sauls of Eureka and Dean Sauls (Nancy) of La Grange; sister, Faye Montague of Wilson and many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Donald Montague, and sister-in-law, Linda Sauls.

Richard’s life was one of service – to education, to faith, and to family. His legacy of love, leadership, and faithfulness will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.

The family would like to acknowledge the care and compassion administered by the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to Richard’s memory to Daniels Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 4828 State Road 1613, Wilson, NC 27893.

Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
