Linwood Earl Hines

June 9, 2025, 75, Goldsboro —

Linwood Earl Hines, 75, finished his earthly journey on Monday, June 9, 2025. Born in Wayne County on September 17, 1949, he was son to the late Edward Hines and Beatrice Creel Hines.

Linwood was a man who lived with quiet strength and a generous heart. He found joy in the simple things—his trusty tractor, a good day of fishing, and helping those around him. Upon retiring, Linwood devoted his time to caring for the grounds at Holiday Island campground in Hertford, NC where he gladly took it upon himself to mow the grass for everyone. He saw it not as a chore, but as a way to give back to a place and a community he loved.

Linwood was a good man—steadfast, kind, and always ready to lend a hand. He never sought praise, but those who knew him understood the depth of his character in the way he lived each day. Linwood took pride in all that he did including serving as the commissioner of the Minzies Creek Water Sanitary District. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Linwood is survived by his; son, Wayne S. Benton and wife Cyndy of Snow Hill; daughter, Vicky Benton Lancaster and husband Eric of Pikeville; grandchildren, Ali Lancaster Legg and husband Jordan, Morgan Lancaster, Kristen Hines, McKayla Benton Reed and husband, Trent, Dylan Benton, Starr Benton and Macy Lancaster; and great-grandchildren, Caiden Waddell, Tucker Lancaster and River Legg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sherby Jean Hines; his son, David Hines.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A graveside service to celebrate Linwood’s life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Pikeville Cemetery with Pastor Troy Holland officiating.
