MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive (UMO) is poised to significantly expand its innovative Reading Clinic, thanks to a substantial grant from the Anonymous Trust. The renewed support for the 2025-2026 academic year totals $67,725, nearly tripling the program’s initial funding and enabling broader impact across the community.
A Growing Commitment to Literacy and Education
Launched in 2023 with a $23,000 grant, the UMO Reading Clinic was created to address two pressing needs: providing targeted literacy assistance to struggling elementary students and offering hands-on teaching experience for UMO education majors. The pilot program, initially serving 10 students from North Duplin Elementary, quickly demonstrated success, paving the way for increased funding and program expansion.
Key Enhancements for the 2025-2026 Year
With the new grant, the Reading Clinic plans to implement several strategic improvements, including:
- Expanded Small Group Tutoring: Increasing the number of students served and intensifying instruction through additional small group sessions.
- Summer Reading Camp: Launching a summer program to ensure consistent reading support beyond the traditional school year.
- Teacher Stipends: Offering stipends to lead teachers at partnering schools in recognition of their vital roles in student success.
A notable development for this upcoming year is a new partnership with Carver Elementary School, enabling the clinic to serve a larger student population and extend its reach across Duplin and Wayne Counties.
Inspiring Growth and Confidence in Young Learners
“Our students arrive eager and motivated,” said Dr. Ashley Johnson, Associate Professor of Education and Fieldwork Coordinator at UMO. “One student even tells his parents he’s ‘going to college’ after his tutoring sessions. Witnessing their academic progress and increased confidence is truly inspiring.”
Evidence-Based Approach and Community Impact
The Reading Clinic’s foundation was laid through UMO’s participation in the Science of Reading Self-Study, which identified the need for enhanced reading comprehension among local elementary students and emphasized the importance of practical training for future educators. Using evidence-based materials such as Flyleaf decodable texts, the clinic employs an individualized approach, assessing each student at the outset and conducting mid-year evaluations to tailor instruction.
A Win-Win for Education and Community
“The UMO Reading Clinic exemplifies a mutually beneficial partnership,” said Dr. Amanda Bullard-Maxwell, Assistant Dean of Education at UMO. “It offers our future teachers invaluable real-world experience while directly supporting our community’s literacy development.”
