June 6, 2025, 74, Goldsboro —
Avis Jean Bunn Mason, 74, peacefully passed away at her home on Friday, June 6, 2025 surrounded by her family. Born in Johnston County on April 26, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Gleamous Bunn and Margie Holland Bunn.
In addition to her parents, Avis was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Wayne Bunn.
Jean is survived by her husband, Jerry Mason; son, Jerry Wayne Mason; grandson, Liam Mason; sisters, Judy Raper, Carolyn Narron, and Ruby Little; and brothers, Junior Bunn, Charlie Bunn, and Ricky Bunn. Jean is also survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
For many years, Jean served in the public school system, working in the cafeteria where she made sure every child received a warm meal, and driving a school bus with a steady hand and a caring heart. Generations of students knew her not only as a dependable figure in their school day, but as someone who truly cared for their well-being.
Jean found great joy in canning food, shucking corn, and snapping fresh green beans—often sharing the fruits of her labor with friends and neighbors. Her cooking was loved among those lucky enough to sit at her table, where a warm meal was always a gesture of love.
Jean also took immense pride in her yard and garden. Her flowers were a source of joy and beauty to all who passed by, blooming as brightly as her generous spirit. Avis will be remembered for her kind heart, her hardworking hands, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Jean will be laid to rest in Kenly Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kenly Funeral Service.
