May 31, 2025, 70, Goldsboro —
Janet Hollowell Whitfield, 70, entered into the presence of her Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Duke University Hospital in Durham. Born and raised in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Ruth and Thomas David Hollowell.
Janet’s life was marked by a deep commitment to faith, family, and education. A 1972 graduate of Southern Wayne High School, she went on to earn her degree in education from Meredith College and later completed her master’s degree at East Carolina University. She dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds in the Wayne County Public School system, retiring after many years of heartfelt service.
Janet’s Christian faith was her guiding light. She was a faithful and active member of The First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro, where she found joy in singing in the choir and fellowshipping with her church family. Her love of worship extended beyond her hometown—whenever she and her husband, Rex, traveled, they made it a point to attend church wherever they were, always finding spiritual connection and community.
Janet also embraced life’s joyful moments. Whether traveling with Rex, dancing as a member of the Sugar Foot Shag Club, or enjoying time with her close circle of girlfriends, she radiated warmth, laughter, and a generous spirit. Her greatest joy came from being surrounded by those she loved, and she deeply valued time spent with family and friends.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Rex Whitfield; her beloved son, Thomas Hollowell Hooks; and her sister. Her presence will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at The First Church in Goldsboro. A service celebrating Janet’s life and legacy will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, with Pastor Bill Rose and Pastor Allen Mayo officiating. She will be laid to rest at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.
Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made in Janet’s honor to The First Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
