NCDOT Prepares for Hurricane Season, Warns of “100 Deadliest Days,” and Expands DMV Saturday Hours

Raleigh, N.C. — As summer arrives, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is gearing up for a busy and critical season. This week, NCDOT highlights preparations for hurricane season, raises awareness about the “100 Deadliest Days” on the roads, and announces the return of Saturday hours at select DMV offices.

Hurricane Season Kicks Off June 1

The official start of hurricane season on June 1 reminds North Carolinians of the need to stay vigilant and prepared. With recent storms like Hurricane Helene impacting parts of the state, NCDOT is fully mobilized to respond before, during, and after hurricanes.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed by visiting ReadyNC.gov for updates on weather alerts, road conditions, and evacuation routes. Real-time traffic information and transportation impacts can be found at DriveNC.gov.

“Plan, prepare, and stay informed,” NCDOT urges residents to protect themselves and their families.

The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer: A Call for Safer Driving

Summer marks a perilous period on North Carolina’s roads, known as the “100 Deadliest Days,” spanning from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This stretch sees a sharp rise in fatal crashes, especially involving teen drivers.

NCDOT strongly urges all drivers, particularly teens, to prioritize safety: slow down, avoid distractions like phones, never drive under the influence, and always buckle up.
