80 New Driver License Examiners Graduate, Boosting DMV Service Across North Carolina

Rocky Mount, N.C. — In a significant step toward improving customer service and reducing wait times, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles celebrated the graduation of 80 new driver license examiners during a ceremony held today at the agency’s headquarters in Rocky Mount.

After completing an intensive five-week training program, these new employees will be deployed to driver license offices throughout the state to enhance staffing levels and support DMV’s continued focus on customer service.

DMV Commissioner Paul Tine emphasized the importance of the examiner role in shaping public perception of the agency.

“At DMV, we are a customer-focused organization. Our mission is to make every interaction with our customers as smooth, efficient, and as positive as possible,” said Tine. “The driver license examiner’s professionalism, patience, and expertise shape the customer’s experience and their perception of who we are as an agency.”

DMV’s Tips for a Better Experience

As the DMV works to address staffing shortages and expand capacity, officials also offered several tips to help customers make the most of their visit:

  • Renew Early: Don’t wait until the last minute—renew up to six months before expiration.
  • Go Online: Most customers can renew their credentials online, provided they didn’t do so during their last renewal.
  • Book an Appointment: Scheduled appointments are available up to 90 days in advance at skiptheline.ncdot.gov and are prioritized from opening until noon.
  • Walk-in Hours: All full-time offices accept walk-in customers from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Part-time and express offices only accept walk-ins.
  • Come Prepared: Check the DMV website for the required documents for your specific service. Liability insurance proof is frequently forgotten.
  • Get a REAL ID: Still need a REAL ID for air travel or access to federal facilities? Visit ncrealid.gov for a list of required documents.

Where the New Examiners Are Headed

The 80 new examiners will be stationed at offices across North Carolina, including Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Asheville, Wilmington, and many smaller towns and rural areas, helping to address local staffing needs and service backlogs.

From large urban centers to small towns like Bryson City, Ahoskie, and Erwin, the deployment reflects the DMV’s effort to distribute service improvements statewide.
