Wayne County — On May 26, a four-vehicle rear-end collision on US Highway 117 resulted in a chain-reaction crash involving multiple cars, though no injuries or citations were reported at the scene. The incident occurred during active traffic conditions and is under investigation by local authorities.
According to the official report, the crash involved a 2014 Volkswagen, a 2012 Dodge Charger, a 2013 Dodge Charger, and a 2019 Honda. All vehicles were traveling in the same direction when the collision occurred.
The incident reportedly began when traffic slowed or came to a stop on US-117. The driver of the 2014 Volkswagen (Vehicle One) indicated that she noticed the 2012 Dodge Charger (Vehicle Two) braking in front of her but was unable to stop in time, resulting in her vehicle rear-ending Vehicle Two. However, due to the rapid progression of events, she was uncertain whether she struck Vehicle Two before or after it had already collided with the 2013 Dodge Charger (Vehicle Three).
Vehicle Two, the 2012 Dodge Charger, reported that it had begun to slow down due to traffic when it was struck from behind by the Volkswagen. That impact, according to Vehicle Two’s account, forced the Dodge Charger into Vehicle Three, which was already stopped in traffic.
Vehicle Three, the 2013 Dodge Charger, confirmed that it was at a complete stop when it was struck from behind by Vehicle Two. The impact then caused Vehicle Three to lurch forward and strike a 2019 Honda (Vehicle Four), which was also stopped in traffic.
The driver of the 2019 Honda reported being rear-ended by Vehicle Three while stationary. All drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities during the investigation.
Due to conflicting statements and uncertainty over the sequence of impacts, officers were unable to conclusively determine whether the 2014 Volkswagen initiated the chain reaction or if the 2012 Dodge Charger had already collided with Vehicle Three before being struck. As a result, no citations were issued in connection with the crash.
Authorities have not reported any injuries resulting from the incident. All vehicles sustained varying degrees of damage, but none were rendered inoperable at the scene. The collision caused temporary traffic delays on US-117 while first responders cleared the roadway.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe following distance, especially in high-traffic or stop-and-go conditions.
