James and Pine Streets Come Alive with Tribute to Black Excellence and History

Goldsboro, N.C. — A powerful celebration of culture, history, and community pride took place on Saturday, May 24, with the debut of the James and Pine Streets Historic Black Business District Memorial Park—also known as the “Living Park”—in downtown Goldsboro.

Held at the intersection of James and Pine Streets, the event marked the beginning of an important new chapter in the city’s effort to honor its African American heritage. Once referred to as the city’s “Black Wall Street,” this area was a thriving center for Black-owned businesses, entertainment venues, and cultural landmarks from the 1950s through the 1980s. It was also a notable stop on the legendary “Chitlin’ Circuit,” a network of performance venues that provided a stage for Black artists during segregation.

The Living Park is designed to preserve and uplift this legacy. It will feature historical markers that highlight the stories of the entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders who shaped this vibrant district despite the challenges of systemic racism and segregation. These markers aim to educate current and future generations about the district’s impact on Goldsboro’s cultural and economic landscape.

The kickoff celebration was a festive, family-friendly gathering. Attendees enjoyed free food catered by Brothas BBQ & Catering, a local favorite, while taking in a lineup of dynamic live performances. Musical artists included A.G. Thomas, R&B Terrell, Jamela L’rato, and Princess Dixon, each bringing their unique sound and energy to the stage and reinforcing the area’s deep-rooted connection to the performing arts.

Organizers emphasized that the launch of the Living Park is just the beginning. The long-term vision includes transforming the initiative into a nonprofit organization, securing grant funding, and expanding programming to further highlight the significance of Black history and entrepreneurship throughout Goldsboro.

Beyond honoring the past, the Living Park initiative aims to build awareness of Black communities and Black-owned businesses across the city. It also serves as a rallying point for future development that is inclusive, community-driven, and historically grounded.

Saturday’s event marked a moment of reflection, celebration, and renewed commitment to preserving the stories that have shaped Goldsboro. As the Living Park grows, it promises to be both a cultural landmark and a catalyst for unity and progress.
