Goldsboro, N.C. — The fight against cancer took center stage Friday night as community members gathered for the annual Relay For Life event, hosted at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fairgrounds. Although attendance was lighter than in past years, the evening offered a meaningful blend of celebration, remembrance, and education in support of cancer awareness and research.
The event began around 6:30 p.m. and wrapped up by 9:00 p.m., offering a condensed program packed with purpose. Organized as part of the American Cancer Society’s nationwide Relay For Life campaign, the event is designed to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and rally the community around ongoing efforts to fund cancer research and patient support services.
One of the evening’s highlights was a classic car show, featuring vintage and custom vehicles on display for guests to enjoy. Car owners proudly showcased their vehicles, adding a nostalgic and engaging element to the event. In addition to the automotive showcase, a fashion show brought energy and excitement to the crowd, with participants modeling a variety of outfits on the runway. These activities added an element of entertainment while keeping the focus on community involvement and charitable giving.
Throughout the evening, several survivorship and remembrance activities took place, though on a smaller scale than in previous years. Relay For Life traditionally includes ceremonial laps, where cancer survivors and caregivers are honored, followed by a luminaria ceremony that remembers those who have passed. While this year’s version was more low-key, the spirit of the event—hope, resilience, and unity—remained strong among attendees.
The Fort Run Fire Department was present for the duration of the event, with multiple units on standby to ensure the safety and well-being of participants. Their presence underscored the community’s commitment to supporting each other, not just in moments of emergency, but during events that bring people together for a cause.
Relay For Life is more than a fundraiser—it serves as a beacon of hope for families affected by cancer. Funds raised through the event go toward vital cancer research, treatment programs, lodging for patients undergoing care far from home, and a 24/7 cancer helpline provided by the American Cancer Society.
While this year’s event may not have drawn a large crowd, organizers and volunteers expressed pride in the continued community support and emphasized the importance of keeping the tradition alive.
