Congressman Don Davis Supports Public Safety and Police Wellness with Votes During National Police Week

Washington, D.C. — As part of National Police Week, Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) voted in favor of three key pieces of legislation aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening protections for law enforcement officers, and addressing officer wellness and mental health.

On Wednesday, May 14, Congressman Davis cast his vote in support of H.R. 2240, the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, a bill he also co-sponsored. The legislation seeks to enhance how data is collected and analyzed regarding assaults on law enforcement personnel. By encouraging more detailed reporting—including whether attacks were premeditated or coordinated—the bill aims to provide a clearer understanding of the threats officers face. Additionally, it tasks the U.S. Department of Justice with evaluating the inclusion of “escalatory aggression” in its reports and reviewing the frequency with which officers access mental health resources.

The purpose of H.R. 2240 is to give policymakers and agencies better tools to formulate strategies that protect officers in the field and support their long-term well-being.

Continuing his support for law enforcement, Congressman Davis voted in favor of H.R. 2243, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) Reform Act, on Thursday, May 15. This bipartisan bill expands the locations where qualified active and retired officers may carry firearms. The goal is to enable trained officers to respond more effectively to emergencies, regardless of location, thereby enhancing public safety.

Also on Thursday, Davis backed H.R. 2255, the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act of 2025, which allows federal officers to purchase their retired service weapons at salvage value. Under current federal policy, these weapons are typically destroyed, resulting in additional taxpayer costs. Supporters of the bill argue that this legislation provides a cost-effective way to honor the service of law enforcement personnel while reducing waste.

“These bills are a step in the right direction,” said Congressman Davis in a statement. “They not only protect officers on the job but also honor their service after retirement.”

The three bills—H.R. 2240, H.R. 2243, and H.R. 2255—now move to the U.S. Senate for consideration. All are part of a broader effort to recognize the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and to ensure they have the tools, protections, and support they need both during and after their careers in public service.
