Goldsboro Fire Department Among State’s Best After Earning Near-Top Safety Rating

Goldsboro, N.C. — The Goldsboro Fire Department has achieved an impressive Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating of 2, following a recent inspection by the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor announced today.

The evaluation is part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS), a statewide program designed to assess fire departments’ preparedness and capabilities. Ratings range from 1 (the highest) to 10 (unrecognized), with most rural departments typically receiving a 9S rating. A rating of 2 places Goldsboro among the top-performing fire departments in the state.

The routine inspection reviewed key aspects of the department’s operations, including staffing levels, equipment maintenance, communication systems, and water availability. The goal is to ensure that departments are adequately equipped and ready to respond effectively to emergencies.

State Fire Marshal Taylor praised Goldsboro Fire Chief Ron Stempien and his team for their performance and dedication.

In addition to recognizing fire departments’ operational strengths, the ISO rating can have a direct financial benefit for residents. A higher rating often leads to lower homeowners’ insurance premiums within the department’s coverage area.

The OSFM inspection process is mandated by state law for departments serving communities of 100,000 people or fewer. These assessments are part of a broader effort to enhance fire safety and emergency response services across North Carolina.
