Congressman Don Davis Introduces Resolution to Honor National Salvation Army Week

Washington, D.C. — Wednesday, May 14, U.S. Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) has introduced House Resolution 404 to formally recognize National Salvation Army Week, observed from May 12 to May 18, 2025. The resolution celebrates the 160-year legacy of the Salvation Army’s humanitarian work across the United States and around the world.

“The Salvation Army has been a shining light of hope for countless individuals and families,” said Congressman Davis. “We deeply honor this remarkable legacy of service and warmly invite all Americans to support its critical mission.”

Founded in 1865, the Salvation Army has played a central role in tackling poverty, homelessness, addiction recovery, and disaster response. The organization currently serves over 27 million Americans each year, offering vital support through food pantries, shelters, and job training programs.

National Salvation Army Week was originally established as a national observance by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, in recognition of the organization’s tireless commitment to serving those in need.

Commissioner Merle Heatwole, National Commander of The Salvation Army, expressed appreciation for the congressional support:
“We are deeply grateful for the leadership of Congressman Davis and Senator Kaine in honoring National Salvation Army Week. This recognition underscores the critical role everyday people play in helping their neighbors – and reaffirms our shared commitment to serve those most in need.”

The resolution also pays tribute to the iconic Red Kettle Campaign, a symbol of American holiday giving, and honors the volunteers, donors, and officers who uphold the organization’s mission of compassion and service.
