Threat Actors Claim Access to NC Student and Teacher Data Following PowerSchool Breach

Raleigh, N.C. — Several employees from schools and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) have received messages from threat actors claiming to possess sensitive student and teacher data compromised in the PowerSchool data breach originally reported in January.

According to NCDPI, similar messages have also been reported by other PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) customers across the country, suggesting a broader impact beyond North Carolina.

In response, NCDPI has alerted appropriate law enforcement agencies, which are now actively investigating the incident. The department has also issued notifications to all Public School Units across the state to ensure awareness and vigilance.

North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice “Mo” Green and NCDPI Chief Information Officer Vanessa Wrenn are scheduled to address the media regarding the situation. Further details will be provided during the briefing.

NCDPI is urging school personnel to remain cautious and report any suspicious communications. Those seeking additional information are encouraged to contact the department at [email protected].
