Swim 1922 Swim Clinic Promotes Water Safety and Confidence for Kinston Youth

Kinston, N.C. A national initiative aimed at saving lives and empowering youth through water safety is coming to Kinston. On May 17 at 10:00 a.m., the Holloway Community Center will host a free two-hour swim clinic for children ages 5 to 13, part of the Swim 1922 program—a partnership between Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and USA Swimming.

The clinic is designed to introduce children to basic swimming techniques, help them feel more comfortable in the water, and build the confidence necessary to stay safe. Organizers emphasize that the program is open to all skill levels, with a focus on creating a positive and inclusive environment.

“Learning to swim is a critical life skill, especially for young children,” said a representative from the organizing team. “This clinic is about more than just swimming—it’s about saving lives.”

Swim 1922 was launched in response to alarming data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reports that approximately 10 people drown each day in the United States. The initiative aims to reduce those numbers by increasing access to swim education and breaking down barriers faced by underserved communities.

The program also supports USA Swimming’s broader mission to promote diversity and inclusion in aquatic sports. By bringing swim lessons directly to local communities, Swim 1922 is working to close the gap in swim participation and make the water a safer place for everyone.

Parents interested in enrolling their children in the May 17 clinic are encouraged to contact the Holloway Community Center for more information.
