John Leonard Henderson, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on February 19 in Raleigh. Born in Goldsboro on January 17, 1939, he was the son of the late John Leonard Henderson and Virginia Crawford Henderson.

A lifelong resident of Goldsboro, Henderson was president of Crawford-Henderson Insurance for 55 years. During his career, he served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, as a governor’s appointee to state committees to update medical malpractice and law enforcement liability insurance laws, and was a member of the NC Reinsurance Facility Board of Governors.

Henderson was chairperson of the Diaconate of First Presbyterian Church, and chairperson of the Administrative Board and a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul United Methodist Church. He also served the community as chairperson of the Wayne County Economic Development Commission, president of both the Goldsboro and Three Eagles Rotary Clubs, president of the Goldsboro Country Club, and president of the Goldsboro Industrial Committee of 100.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961 and was an avid Tar Heel fan his entire life. He also served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1962-1968. 

Henderson is survived by his three children, Johanna Henderson Reese of Cary (Charles), Amy Henderson Hoglund of Raleigh (Tyler), Douglas Leonard Henderson of Durham (Kathryn); his six grandchildren, Cameron Reese, James Hoglund, Daniel Reese, Virginia Hoglund, Edith Henderson, and Reid Henderson; and his sister, Alice Henderson Dickson and her husband, James, of Waxhaw. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him. 

The family will hold a memorial service Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 10:00 at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro followed by a visitation at 11:00 at First Presbyterian Church, 1101 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro. Memorial offerings may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
