Marty Ray Brogden

March 21, 2025, 71, Grantham —

Marty Ray Brogden, 71, passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025 at his home. Born in Wayne County on September 26, 1953, he was the son of the late Jesse Ray and Barbara Garnell Barefoot Brogden.

Marty is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 53 years, Ann Anderson Brogden; son, Shawn Brogden; daughter, Beth Ann Lane (Matthew); granddaughters, Kaiya Lane and Kia Lane; sister, Kaye Harrell (Dannie); brother, Jeff Brogden (Mindy); and several special nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Born with a deep passion for music, Marty began playing instruments at the age of 15, and music quickly became an inseparable part of his life. Over the years, he became a talented and versatile musician, mastering the keyboard, saxophone, and guitar. Marty’s love for music knew no bounds, and he played everything from country to soul, dedicating his life to his craft. He spent a decade touring the East Coast with The Midnite Express Band, where he proudly played professionally for 10 years. But his musical journey didn’t stop there. Marty later returned to the music of his youth, focusing on the vibrant sounds of the 60’s, Beach, and Soul music. His songs were not just melodies but pieces of his soul, and several of them were featured on local radio stations, bringing joy to the community he cherished so much.

As a skilled musician and music writer, Marty also shared his knowledge and passion with others. He owned and operated his own music studio, where he recorded music for a wide range of artists and genres. His dedication to music was matched only by his desire to help others. Marty was a jack of all trades—a true man of many hats who was always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

In addition to his musical talents, Marty was a proud and patriotic man who served his country with honor in the North Carolina National Guard. His love for his country was unwavering, and he took great pride in his service.

Family was at the heart of Marty’s life. He was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, and “Papa Marty” to his beloved grandchildren. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Marty had a deep connection with his friends, particularly fellow musicians Terry Batson and Mark Bryan, who were not only his bandmates but also his brothers in spirit.

Marty also had a special bond with his canine companions. His miniature poodle, CoCo, who preceded him in death, held a special place in his heart, and his love for his dog, Presley, brought him great joy. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time in nature with family and friends, including his longtime fishing companion, Danny Strickland wetting a line and making memories in the process.

Marty’s legacy will live on through the music he created, the love he shared with those closest to him, and the countless lives he touched along the way. His family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him will miss his kind heart, his musical genius, and his unwavering spirit.

A service to celebrate Marty’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2025 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Marty Gurganus officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
