Luther Namon Hare

March 21, 2025, 80, Goldsboro —

Luther Namon Hare, 80, of Goldsboro, passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. While we will miss him beyond measure, we take comfort in knowing that he is now in Heaven—probably on a fishing boat, swapping stories, and convincing everyone up there that this big is an accurate way to measure a fish.

Luther lost his father at a young age and, as the oldest sibling, took on the responsibility of helping his mother. Though he never completed a formal education, he had a knack for fixing just about anything. His children will proudly tell you he was one smart cookie, always able to figure things out—whether it was fixing something around the house or a creative way to get out of paying the check at a restaurant.

He spent most of his career as a truck driver and retired from Goldsboro Milling in 2019. When he wasn’t behind the wheel, he was happiest with a fishing rod in hand, preferably on a charter boat in the ocean. The only things he loved more than fishing and UNC Tar Heel basketball were Jesus and his family. And given that his beloved Tar Heels weren’t up to par during March Madness this year, he decided he’d rather pass into the eternal love of God than watch them lose another tournament.

He never met a stranger and was known for his quick wit, kind heart, and ability to make anyone laugh. If there’s a steak restaurant in Heaven, he’s already telling the waitress he “didn’t order” the check. He was a lover of old Western movies—so much so that if watching John Wayne movies had been a paying job, he’d have been a millionaire.

Luther is reunited in Heaven with his parents, Namon Henry Hare and Viola Gray Hare, as well as his sisters Christine Hare Grady, Lucy Hare Dail, and Ann Hare Beck.

Luther was a devoted husband to his wife, Cheryl Cook Hare, who he leaves behind. Their life together was filled with love, laughter, and plenty of stories worth telling.

He cherished his role as a father to Bridgette Hare Lassiter (Marc), Namon Howard Hare (Christy), Christopher Hill, and Tiffany Kight (Jerrett). His grandchildren, Patrick Curren O’Grady (Peyton), Dade K. Grady, Hudson Namon Hare, Ava Hare, CJ Hill, Alex Hill, and Josie Kight, will forever carry his love, wit, and wisdom in their hearts. He is also survived by his brother, Buck Hare, and sister, Donnie Busdieker, who shared in a lifetime of memories and laughter with him.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 29, at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro, NC, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow in the chapel at 3:00 PM with Rev. Andy Stovall officiating.

Flowers are welcome, but for those who wish to honor Luther in another way, the family encourages you to share a laugh with someone, watch an old Western, or spend some time fishing—preferably with a story about the one that got away. Donations in Luther’s memory may also be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to continue their mission of helping children and families in need.
