Marjorie Eloise Helms, 90, passed away at home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born on July 3, 1934, Eloise lived a life marked by her dedication to her family and community. She was born in Elizabethtown, NC to the late Florence and William F. Campbell.
During her high school years, Eloise was a state record holder in basketball. She was recognized by the News and Observer for two consecutive years as the state basketball player of the year. Eloise had a career-scoring average of 35 points a game. She led her team to win the North Carolina State girls’ basketball title scoring 75 points in the title game. At her graduation, Eloise was recognized as the all-time state girls scoring leader. Eloise later graduated from Flora McDonald College.
Eloise had a deep passion for Duke Basketball, a love she developed while residing in Durham and during Glenn’s collegiate years at Duke University.
Her professional life was equally notable, having served as a secretary at Duke Hospital and was instrumental in the growth of the Second Fling Consignment Store in Goldsboro. Her commitment to her work was paralleled by her devotion to her faith, actively participating in the community of St. Paul Methodist Church.
Eloise’s personal life was filled with activities that brought joy not only to her but also to those around her. Eloise was an avid golfer, a skilled bridge player, and enjoyed spending time at her beach home. Traveling with family and friends was always a highlight for her. Eloise always enjoyed New York City at Christmas as well as time in the tropics with her favorite place being Jamaica. She also dedicated many hours to various volunteering efforts, reflecting her generous spirit and commitment to service.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the church parlor at St. Paul Methodist Church followed by a service to celebrate Eloise’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. James H. Harry officiating.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Glenn Helms; sons, Michael Glenn Helms and wife, Kelly of Goldsboro and Bradley Heath Helms of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, David Shaw; sister-in-law, Linda Millar and husband, George; nieces, Donna Shaw Pleasant and husband, Mike and Karen Gordon and husband, Keith; and nephew, Lyn Shaw and wife, Jayme.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Selma Campbell Johnson, Alma Grace Campbell, and Eunice Campbell Shaw; and brother, Renice Franklin Campbell.
Eloise was the cherished glue that held the Helms family together. She will be remembered for her role as a beloved figure to many, including her wonderful caregivers, Ruth Russell, Lisa Delguercio, Eric Lane, Matilda Thompson, Megan Rose, Joanne Wilson, Michelle Mills, Treva Allen, and Beth Spainhour. Her life was a testament to her enduring kindness and the strong bonds she fostered with all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and the community she so lovingly served.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to the Shepherd’s Fund at St. Paul Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
