Mary Jones Mitchell Berlin

May 17, 2024, 94, La Grange —

October 17, 1929 – May 17, 2024

Mary Jones Mitchell Berlin, 94, passed away on May 17, 2024. Mary’s faith became sight as she entered into life eternal with her Lord and beheld beauty our minds cannot fathom. Born in Lenoir County on October 17, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Mary Jones Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 71 years, Dr. Mel Berlin; son-in-law, Chris Wegmann; and her brother, Dr. John Mitchell.

A graduate of Duke University, Mary received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education. Though she was quickly offered a job in the teaching profession, she chose to accept a position with Liggett Myers Tobacco where she worked through the ranks and became head hostess. There she offered tours of the company to many people of notoriety and truly loved every moment of her career.

Known for her beautiful soprano voice, Mary performed solos in many weddings and funerals throughout La Grange, beginning at only 15 years old. She utilized her talents as a member of the Duke University Choir while attending college, and there she met her future husband, Mel. Not only were they great choral singers, but his baritone voice combined with her soprano and the tenor voice of her brother, John, made an exquisite trio.

Mary and Mel married on December 21, 1952, and made their home in Durham where Mel completed his internship. Following his internship, the family moved to Savannah for Mel to complete his residency. There, Mary found her love for living by the water. Walking along the beach looking for shells or fishing off of the dock were great joys. No matter where they were on the beach, Mary could spot a keyhole limpet almost every time. With her shell collections, she made beautiful lamps, mirrors, and plaques. Mary also loved anything to do with nature. She shared her love of flowers and birds with her children and grandchildren.

With a sharp mind, Mary was an excellent Bridge player and enjoyed playing with her friends in the Savannah Bridge Club. She loved to sew and knit and loved knitting blankets for her children, grandchildren, and friends. Her family and many others were fortunate to enjoy all the wonderful meals that came from her kitchen as she was a renowned cook.

Returning to North Carolina in 1979, Mary and Mel made their home again in Durham where he joined the Athletics department as a physician. While the two enjoyed their time in Durham, Mary was delighted to return to the coast when they retired to Hubert in 1998. Though the destruction of Hurricane Florence decimated their home, it brought the opportunity for them to enjoy life once again in Savannah where they spent four wonderful years together. In 2023, it was Mel’s desire to return Mary to her childhood community, and the two made their final home in La Grange.

A service of love and remembrance will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home with Pastor Linda Grider officiating. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at Jack’s Party Barn.

Mary wore many hats and was known by many names, but she was most fond of her titles as Mom and Nana.

Mary is survived by her children, Jack Berlin (Leslie), Kathy Wegmann, and David Berlin (Louise); five grandchildren, Lauren Wiggs (Trey), Jack Carr (Hallie), Lindsey Berlin (James Hale), Greg Berlin, and Melody Berlin (Brandon Boyer); six great-grandchildren, Emmett Wiggs, John Wiggs, Adeline Carr, Jack Lawrence “Law” Carr, III, Eleanor Carr, and Callaway Boyer; along with many dear friends.

Mary’s family would like to express their gratitude to the many caregivers who have loved Mary like family, both in Savannah and La Grange. Additionally, the care in recent days from Gentiva Hospice has been exceptional and greatly appreciated.
