MOUNT OLIVE — The Southbound lane of U.S. 117 Bypass near the University of Mount Olive has been reopened after being shut down for several hours on Friday after a tractor-trailer carrying logs ran off the road.
The accident occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m., and as a result of the accident logs spilled out across the highway, forcing the Southbound lane of U.S. 117 Bypass to be closed. The truck was traveling in the Southbound lane when it attempted to pass a slower-moving vehicle that had just merged onto the bypass.
Firefighters from Mount Olive along with Wayne County EMS Station 9 were dispatched to the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital to be examined by medical personnel.
North Carolina DOT personnel were called to the scene to assist in the lane closure while the accident was being investigated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Charges are pending
