READ Wayne to Host Partnership Summit to Improve Early Literacy Rates

READ Wayne, the Wayne County chapter of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, is excited to announce the upcoming READ Wayne Partnership Summit on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at the Goldsboro branch of the Wayne County Public Library and aims to address the critical issue of early literacy in Wayne County.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a nationwide, community-based response to the growing concern of literacy rates in children. This movement recognizes that learning does not happen in schools alone. Instead, learning occurs from birth, both in and outside of school. The Campaign recognizes that the mobilized community is responsible for collaborating with schools and aligning resources around research-based strategies that can create equitable opportunities for all children. The READ Wayne coalition has been active since 2014. It is dedicated to providing support and resources to children from birth to age eight and their families to ensure that all children are proficient readers by the end of third grade.

“Research has consistently demonstrated the direct correlation between third-grade reading success, high school graduation rates, future earning potential, and reduced incarceration rates,” said Heather Gray, literacy and outreach librarian with the Wayne County Public Library. “Sadly, the statistics reveal that an alarming 50%-60% of children across the nation struggle to read proficiently by the end of third grade. By both increasing and removing barriers to summer learning, school readiness, and school attendance, we can do our part in creating a county where young children are on the path to third grade reading success from birth.”

The READ Wayne Partnership Summit serves as a platform for community leaders, advocates, and concerned individuals to come together and contribute to improving early literacy rates in Wayne County. This event provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into the current state of literacy in our community, understand the strategies and initiatives implemented to address the impact of the pandemic, and actively participate in the future of early literacy programs.

READ Wayne is a coalition led by the Wayne County Public Library. Leading partners include Wayne County Public Schools, Wayne Community College, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Communities Supporting Schools Wayne County, WAGES, Partnership for Children Wayne County, and Goldsboro Pediatrics.
