On May 11, 2023, Virginia Todd Herlihy, age 93, died peacefully in her home in Walnut Creek, NC, surrounded by loving family and caregivers. Ginny was born on February 4, 1930, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The daughter of a career Army officer, she traveled the globe as a child; graduating from Yokohama High School in 1948 while her father was stationed in Occupied Japan. Ginny was the daughter of the late Lt. Col James C. Todd and Lillie Matthews Todd. She had one sibling, the late Capt. James C. Todd, Jr. of Cape Coral, FL. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1953 and was a lifelong UK Wildcats fan.

Ginny had many friends and interests, notably many years as a member of the Goldsboro Duplicate Bridge Club, where she achieved a Silver Life Master status during her playing days.

Ginny was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lt. Col. James L. Herlihy. Jim and Ginny met in Alaska and married in 1954. She continued her travels for Jim’s Air Force career, raising three children; James Michael Herlihy of Goldsboro, NC, Mary Herlihy Flint (Peter) of Loveland, OH, and Daniel Todd Herlihy of Goldsboro, NC. Ginny is also survived by five grandchildren: Zachary Flint of New York, NY, Dr. Lillie Campbell (Ryan) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Joseph Herlihy of Philadelphia, PA, Thomas Herlihy of New Bern, NC, and Kathryn Herlihy of Tallahassee, FL. and one great-grandchild; Margaret (Maggie) Mae Campbell. She was a loving aunt to 11 nieces and nephews, their spouses, and their children.

Ginny will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, beside her beloved Jim, at a future date yet to be determined.

A Mass for family and friends will be held at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Goldsboro on Saturday, June 3rd at 11:00 am.
