WCC Offers Junior Bison Summer Camps

Wayne Community College’s Junior Bison Camps will allow middle school and high school students to explore nine career options this summer.

“The college takes great pride in providing these opportunities for young people to experience careers and sparking genuine interests in areas that could change the trajectory of their lives,” said Renita Allen Dawson, WCC vice president for workforce continuing education and community engagement.

“We are excited to bring back some of our most popular career exploration camps, namely Allied Health, Video Game Academy, Public Safety and Let’s Go LEGO® Leadership,” Dawson said. “Additionally, we have some new career exploration opportunities that we are looking forward to sharing with young people this year. They are Truck Driver Training, Beekeeping and Entertainment Technology.”

This year’s camps are:

Allied Health Career Exploration – June 19-22: 9 a.m.-noon for rising sixth-eighth graders and 1-4 p.m. for rising ninth-12th graders. This camp will introduce campers to allied health career fields and will include basic first aid and CPR training. Cost: $60.

Beekeepers Camp – June 19-22: 9 a.m.-noon for rising ninth-12th graders and 1-4 p.m. for rising sixth-eighth graders. This camp investigates the importance of pollinating insects in the environment. Participants will learn about honey bees and beekeeping through lectures and hands-on activities.. Cost: $60.

Business Career Exploration – June 26-29: 9 a.m.-noon for rising sixth-eighth graders and 1-4 p.m. for rising ninth-12th graders. Campers will learn how money works and what it takes to work in business. They will get hands-on experience with a chance to create their own businesses and design a logo. Cost: $60.

Entertainment Technology Career Exploration – June 26-29: 9 a.m.-noon for rising ninth-12th graders and 1-4 p.m. for rising sixth-eighth graders. This camp introduces the various aspects of entertainment technology. Campers will learn about creating digital music, video editing, stage lighting, and entertainment promotion. Cost: $80.

Let’s Go LEGO® Leadership – June 19-22: 9 a.m.-noon for rising sixth-eighth graders.  Campers will learn leadership skills through creative LEGO® activities. They will get experience working in teams and leading projects using LEGO® bricks. The campers will learn what style of leadership they have and how that style works in teams. Cost: $60.

Public Safety Career Exploration – July 10-13: 9 a.m.-noon for rising ninth-12th graders. This camp introduces the basics of law enforcement, emergency medical service, and fire service careers and gives campers hands-on experience in these areas. Cost: $60.

Reading Camp – July 10-13; 1-4 p.m. for rising sixth-eighth graders. This camp reinforces and enhances middle school students’ regular academic coursework. The leader will facilitate content that provides a practical summer learning experience. Cost: $80.

Truck Driving Career Exploration – June 26-29: 1-4 p.m. for rising ninth-12th graders. This camp introduces the truck driving industry. The campers will learn the steps to obtain the credentials to become a truck driver and explore truck drivers’ day-to-day responsibilities. Cost: $60.

Video Game Academy – July 10-13: 9 a.m.-noon for rising sixth-eighth graders. This camp introduces various aspects of simulation and game development. Campers will engage in 3D modeling, storyboarding, programming, and animation; create video games; design and produce game artifacts; and participate in a game tournament.  Cost: $80.
