Elwood Leroy Allen, 81, of 414 Winnifred Street, Faison, NC 28341, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022, while in the care of Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC.

Elwood was born November 25, 1940 in Kinston, NC, the son of the late Roy Allen and Thelma Barwick Allen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son and best friend, Craig Allen; his brother, Kenneth Allen; sister, Margaret Parrott; brother-in-law, Ronald Sumrell; and father and mother-in-law, Robert Sumrell and Lillian Monroe Sumrell.

Elwood is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bobbie Sumrell Allen, and his daughter Christy Allen of Faison, NC. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Reid Parrott, of Greenville, NC; and a sister-in-law, Dottie Allen, of Kinston, NC.

Elwood grew up in Kinston, NC and graduated from Grainger High School and the Raleigh School of Data Processing. In 1963 he moved to Faison to begin employment at Charles F. Cates and Sons Pickle Company where his interest in computers enabled him to become a Data Processing Manager at Cates for over 30 years. He always loved his family, friends, the town of Faison, and his work family at Cates.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Elwood’s life on Monday, August 22, at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, NC with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in the Faison Cemetery.

The family would like to give special thanks to caregivers, Anna Babio and Linda Gress, who were devoted to Elwood’s care at home for several months. Also, we give special thanks to the many healthcare workers especially at Kitty Askins who provided so many services.

The family welcomes visitors at the home on 414 Winnifred St., Faison, NC before or after the memorial service.
