(GDN) — A Wayne County bridge will bear the name of a well-known and loved citizen of Fremont.

Friday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation officially dedicated the “Mayor Andy Evans Bridge.”

Speakers included Town of Fremont leaders and dear friends of Evans who spoke of his dedication to family and community.

Named after the late Fremont Mayor Floyd Anthony “Andy” Evans, the bridge carries N.C. 222 over I-795 just west of Fremont.

Evans was the mayor of Fremont in the 1990s and president of Evans Farms Inc.

A charter member of the Fremont Area Jaycees, Evans also served on the Wayne Community College board of trustees and was inducted into the N.C. Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2013.

The town of Fremont and the Wayne County Board of Commissioners requested the bridge be named “Mayor Andy Evans Bridge.”

The N.C. Board of Transportation approved the request in a resolution adopted last fall.
