Athlete Of The Week: Jamaiya Bass

Southern Wayne is off to its best start in over a decade, and Jamaiya Bass has played a vital role in the Saints’ success.

Bass said a big part of the Saint’s 13-0 start is their team’s selflessness and chemistry.

“It’s a sisterhood. We’re a family, and we might get mad at each other, but we always come back together,” Bass said. “We love each other, and we’re one big, happy family.

“It’s a sisterhood that you’re going to have for life.”

She played basketball for most of her life but only started to take it seriously in the seventh grade. Now a junior, Bass is having a great season on the court.

Bass is averaging a team-high 11 points, but it is not about scoring the most points for her. It’s about doing whatever it takes to get the win.

“We’ve formed a bond,” Bass said. “We know what everybody can do, and everyone contributes to the team. We’re not selfish. We’ll give you the ball, and we don’t care if you miss it, do it again.”

With the end of the season a month away, Bass and her teammates will look to win the Quad County 3A Conference title and a playoff run.

And they will do it as a family.
