(GDN) – Fire rips through the heart of Downtown Mount Olive. The blaze erupted in a handful of the business buildings on the south end of Center Street on Wednesday. While some of the structures burned, nearby buildings also suffered heavy smoke damage. Multiple fire departments from Wayne County and the surrounding area were called in to battle the blaze. Law enforcement helped by blocking off the south end of Center Street while the firefighters worked in shifts to contain the blaze. A Wayne County EMS unit was on-scene, and several nearby businesses assisted by bringing water to the firefighters during the operation. Mount Olive Fire Chief Greg Wiggins asked for assistance from the Office of Emergency Services. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was injured during the operation.
