Wyatt Elwood Roberts

October 31, 2021, 91, Calypso –

Wyatt Elwood Roberts, at the age of 91, passed away early Sunday morning, October 31, 2021, while at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Mr. Roberts, born on the family farm in the Beautancus community to parents, Jesse Bryant and Llia Swinson Roberts, graduated from Calypso High School and attended diesel mechanics school in Tennessee, which was followed by a stay in Virginia where he went for work.

Upon return to Duplin County, he was employed for a 15-year span with Mt. Olive Pickle Company as a maintenance supervisor. He then took over the reigns of Leon Britt’s Repair Shop, and in years to come, relocated the business, renaming it Roberts Machine Shop. Today, the business operates as Roberts Machine and Supply Company (ROMASCO), and he leaves his son, Kevin, in charge.

Mr. Roberts had served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a proud and patriotic American and held one of the longest tenures of membership (over 50 years) in the American Legion Post 103 in Mount Olive where he served as commander for numerous appointments. He was a member of Rones Chapel United Methodist Church, was an avid fisherman, and was a good steward and neighbor in the Rones Chapel community.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his son, Wyatt Kevin Roberts and his wife, Kathy, of Dudley; two grandchildren, Ryan Kevin Roberts and his wife, Maureen, of Benson, and Morgan Roberts Lee and her husband, Kenny, of Mount Olive; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Mallory Lee, of Mount Olive; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha Roberts Smith and George Smith of Mount Olive; a sister-in-law, Marie Roberts of Mount Olive; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, loved ones who have preceded him in death include his wife, Dorothy “Tom” Turner Roberts; his twin brother, Wayne Bryant Roberts; his other brothers, Boyce PIerce Roberts; and Adrian Ray Roberts and wife, Henrietta Roberts; and a sister-in-law, Gerline Turner.

Visitation for the Roberts family will be Wednesday, November 3, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Thursday, November 4, at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, it is the request of the family that memorial gifts be made to American Legion Post 103, Mount Olive, NC 28365, or Roberts-Swinson Endowment, University of Mount Olive, PO Box 90, Mount Olive, NC 28365.
