Eastern Wayne got off to a hot start against C.B. Aycock and never cooled off.

The Warriors, led by a stable of running backs, consistently marched down the field during a 47-20 victory against the Golden Falcons on Friday evening.

The triumph moved Eastern Wayne to 2-0 on the season, while C.B. Aycock drops to 0-2.

“We wanted to start early, and unlike what we did at Southern Wayne where we were pretty much in the red zone early and didn’t convert, in this game we capitalized,” Eastern Wayne head coach Leander Oates said. “We knew coming in that we going to try to control the clock early, pound it, and wear them out.”

The Warriors wasted no time in getting points on the board.

After the opening kickoff, the Warriors started at their own 44-yard line and methodically went down the field with a quarterback sneak from Trevor Warren, giving Eastern Wayne a 6-0 lead.

Eastern Wayne got the ball right back when C.B. Aycock fumbled on its opening possession.

Seven plays later, another quarterback keeper from Warren and a successful two-point conversion put the Warriors ahead 14-0.

“We have offensive weapons that can move,” Oates said.

The Warriors would take a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter when Warren and Albert Brown connected on a 41-yard touchdown.

C.B. Aycock was forced to punt on its next possession, and the Warriors took advantage. On the second play of the Warriors’ drive, Zion Rodgers broke loose for a 25-yard scoring run to put the Warriors ahead 26-0.

Brown intercepted C.B. Aycock Ethan Brock for a pick-six, but a touchdown was called back due to a block in the back, but the Warriors still got the ball at their own 40-yard line.

Eastern Wayne drove down the field, and with 10 seconds left until halftime, Demontae Robinson crossed the goal line to give the Warriors a 33-0 halftime lead.

“Our biggest thing over the summer was making sure we have good conditioning. We stay in the weight room more than we’re on the field so that we can get stronger,” Oates said. “Most people don’t know that our offensive line is made up of sophomore and juniors, so we have something to feed off of, and we’re just moving the chains with them.”

C.B. Aycock got on the board midway through the second quarter when Daniel Frederick returned a punt for a 75-yard touchdown.

However, the Warriors responded and took a 40-8 lead on the ensuing possession when Warren threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Zavian Oates.

Brock’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Demarion Prince early in the fourth quarter cut Eastern Wayne’s lead down to 40-14, but the Warriors used a quick five-play drive capped off with Brown catching a 32-yard touchdown pass to take a 47-14 lead.

Kamran Prince returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but the game was well in the Warriors’ hands, and they ran out the clock to seal the win.

“The biggest thing with Trevor is settling him down. Last year, we put him in situations where it was like pass, pass, pass,” Oates said. “He has a great arm, and we all know he’s a baseball player, but we want to make sure he calms down.”

Now 2-0, with the two wins coming against Southern Wayne and C.B. Aycock. Oates said it feels good to be 2-0 but noted it’s a long season, and there’s still a lot of football to be played.

Both squads are back on the gridiron on Thursday. Eastern Wayne hosts James Kenan, while C.B. Aycock travels to North Lenoir.

“We have James Kenan coming in next week, and we know regardless of if they change coaches that James Kenan still has some great young kids,” Oates said. “So, we have to watch the film, and it’s a short week with games being moved because of the holiday weekend.”
