C.B. Aycock got the job done in its season opener against Goldsboro.

Austin Sawkiw scored the game’s only goal, and the Golden Falcons defeated the Cougars 1-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

“I thought our ball movement was good, but I’m not content on the performance, though. I think we definitely take it another step,” C.B. Aycock head coach Dominick Albano said. “We all knew going into the season that finishing was going to be our main issue, and it still is our issue.

“But it’s the first game of the season, and we’ll get there.”

In the first half, the Golden Falcons controlled the game’s pace and had multiple shots on goal but could not score any goals.

After not fielding a team last season, the Cougars made their long-awaited return to the soccer pitch, and Goldsboro managed to hold off the Golden Falcons for the first half. However, the Cougars struggled to get shots on goal.

“At halftime, I counted 14 shots on goal, while we’d given up zero. We just couldn’t convert,” Albano said. “Goldsboro has a good coach, and I coached against their goalie when he was in middle school, and he’s an outstanding player.

“Goldsboro has some really good players, and I think they’re just trying to connect the pieces as well.”

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Falcons scored the game’s only goal in the 44th minute. Sawkiw came charging down the left side of the pitch, and he knocked the ball into the back of the net.

“We’ve been trying to attack through our wings and get our wingers producing to the end line and then crossing the ball and scoring, so I thought it was a brilliant play,” Albano said.

For the rest of the game, the Golden Falcons continued to control every phase of the game and drained the time remaining on the clock to get the victory.

C.B. Aycock (1-0 overall) faces North Lenoir (0-1) tonight, while Goldsboro (0-1) will look forward to a rematch against the Golden Falcons on Aug. 24.

“I want more goals. We’re moving the ball well, and we worked on that all preseason, and it’s just scoring,” Albano said. “We need to convert on our chances in order to succeed this season.”
