Helen Marie Connor Sullivan, 92, was received into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 8, 2021. Helen was born in Kenansville to the late William Elec Connor and Lillie Belle Gooding Connor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Wayne Sullivan; and a son, John Wayne Sullivan; and siblings, Annie Bell Sullivan and William Connor.
Possessing a strong work ethic, Helen rose early in the morning and worked until dark making sure everything ran smoothly on the family farm. Before sunrise, she would begin preparing a spread of delicious food that would feed the whole family and all of the help. From there, she’d join the rest of the workers in the tobacco field. When it was time for lunch, Helen would return to the kitchen to heat up what she had prepared. From chicken and pastry to cornbread, whatever she prepared was a delight.
Helen had a strong commitment and love for her Lord and Savior. As an attentive mother and grandmother, she taught the love and fear of God to her family and ensured that they were in church when the doors were opened. She lived by the Word of God and leaned strongly on her personal values. When she said “no”, her family knew that’s exactly what she meant. However, the grandkids held a special place in her heart and may have gotten away with a little more!
From stitching quilts to crocheting afghans, Helen was quite the talented craftswoman. Working on a new flower arrangement or her plastic canvas, she was sure to have a project right beside her chair, ready to pick up any time she had a spare moment.
A service to celebrate and remember Helen’s life will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Monday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m. Committal will follow at Cobb Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation at Rouse Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
Helen is survived by her children, Martie Sullivan, Ray Sullivan, Jimmy Sullivan (Migdalia), and Donna Corbin (Ron); 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
