Goldsboro 20, Northside-Jacksonville 19

The Cougars pulled off an amazing victory to open their season.

Goldsboro defeated Northside-Jacksonville 20-19 in double overtime on Friday evening.

Down 13-0 with 4:48 left in the fourth quarter, Justin Taylor scored a touchdown to cut the Monarchs’ lead down to 13-7. Damon Brown intercepted Northside-Jackonsviles’ quarterback with two minutes left to give the Cougars a chance to tie or win the game.

With 50 seconds remaining on the clock, Jamin Jacobs threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Brown to tie the game. However, the Cougars missed the extra point, and the game was sent into overtime.

Both teams missed field goal attempts during the first overtime, which sent the game into its second overtime period. During the second overtime, the Monarchs got the ball first and took advantage by scoring a touchdown.

But the Monarchs missed the extra point, and the Cougars pounced on the Monarchs’ missed opportunity.

Jacobs threw a touchdown pass to Deonte Moore to tie the game 19-19, and freshman Robert Govan nailed the extra point attempt to give the Cougars the win.

Jacobs completed eight passes 113 yards and touchdowns and rushed for 65 yards on eight carries. Brown caught four passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Moore had three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Brian Buckon had 10 tackles to lead the Cougars’ defense. Braxton Morton finished the game with six tackles, while Brown had six tackles and an interception.

Goldsboro (1-0 overall) will host Anson (0-1) in its home opener next Friday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Spring Creek 36, Lakewood 26

Lucas Barfield rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries during Spring Creek’s 36-26 season-opening victory against Lakewood on Friday evening. Barfield also threw one touchdown pass.

Dorian Cherry rushed for 54 yards, while Douglas Davidson added 42 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, Davidson had nine tackles and one sack, and Robert Wiggins finished the game with five tackles and one sack.

The Gators return to action next Friday when they travel to Union. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

D.H. Conley 28, Southern Wayne 0

D.H. Conley scored 22 points in the first half and posted a 28-0 victory over Southern Wayne in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening.

Jerome Moore had 12 carries for 32 yards, while Darius Jackson, Paul Francis, Adam Cain and Wadshon Pierre-Louis also toted the pigskin.

Francis also completed five passes 55 yards. Jackson had two receptions for 28 yards. Tayvon Callahan caught two passes 16 yards and Pierre-Louis had one reception for 11 yards.

“For this to have been the first game with only two weeks to prepare against this caliber of a team who’s had time since June, we saw a lot of bright spots. Our defense played great. Our offense was able to move the ball but just couldn’t get in the end zone,” Southern Wayne head coach Ronnie McClary said. “We had about three or four fumbles and just couldn’t sustain drives. We’ll take this and use it as a teaching lesson, but to see the competitiveness from these guys was really something that we can and will build off of.”

Southern Wayne (0-1 overall) returns home Friday for a matchup against county rival C.B. Aycock. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.
