The Eastern Wayne girls’ basketball team battled hard to stay in the game against New Bern on Thursday night.
But the Warriors’ tough effort was not enough.
The Bears used the fourth quarter to pull away late for a 40-29, Eastern Carolina 3A/4A Conference victory.
With the score tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter, both teams endured an offensive lull in the first quarter. Both squads’ offensive output picked up in the second quarter, but the Warriors were down 11-10 at halftime.
New Bern built a 20-14 lead at the end of three quarters, only to see Eastern Wayne pull within four points.
However, the Warriors could not get any closer as New Bern used a 15-8 run to pull away. Eastern Wayne (0-2 overall) hosts J.H. Rose (0-3) on Tuesday.
