Mamie Lorraine Westbrook Sutton

December 26, 2020, 94, Mount Olive

Mamie Lorraine Westbrook Sutton, 94, died Saturday, December 26, while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro.

Lorraine was born to the late John Lovette and Mamie Whitfield Westbrook, in the Thunder Swamp community outside Mount Olive. She, along with her two sisters learned early the meaning of hard work, as they helped on the farm along with their parents. Lorraine continued to reside in the Thunder Swamp community after being married to the late Harry Ellsworth Sutton, Sr., where they would raise their family, and own/ operate Sutton’s Radio and TV Service. By her husband’s side, she was the businesses secretary/treasurer for 59 years up until her decline in health in 2016. Lorraine loved her family business, being able to work closely from home and with her boys at the shop. She could always be counted to be present during the business day; cooking meals for the boys at lunch, taking care of her grandchildren, keeping the yard neatly mowed, tending to the garden, all while maintaining a tidy home. Lorraine also spent much of her life at Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church; where for years she served in numerous capacities: Sunday school teacher, Church Clerk, choir member and director, and Ladies Auxiliary. She was also an active part of the 1968 church building project. Lorraine would always be present for any church function, whether at the church, or representing the church at a function. Her home cooking was also a treat at Homecomings and around the family table at Thanksgiving. Homemade Chicken pastry, dressing, and chocolate pies were her specialty.

Lorraine leaves to cherish her memory her two sons; Harry Ellsworth Sutton, Jr., and his wife Dixie of Mount Olive, and Johnny M. Sutton of the home; two grandchildren, Nicole H. Lauster, and husband Fred, and Travis S. Hardy and fiancée’ Caitlin Goheen; two great-grandchildren, Sutton and Addon Lauster; sisters-in-law, Joyce Blizzard and family of Dunn, and Edith Sutton and family of Mount Olive; and several special nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Ellsworth Sutton, Sr.; a daughter, Cathy Sutton Hardy; sisters and brothers-in-law, James and Jean Holmes, and Inez and George Potts

The Sutton family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the care and attention given to their mother from Toni Strickland; and their cousins Donna Potts, and Eileen Whitfield.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December the 30, 11 o’clock in the morning at Wayne Memorial Park, Dudley, with the Rev. Michael L. “Mickey” Whitfield, and the Rev. Brian Wheeler officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6-8pm. Flowers are welcome, or memorials can be directed to Northeast Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Jo Brown, Kelly Springs Road, Mount Olive.
